Regional Innovation Fund (RIF)

The Regional Innovation Fund provided support to promote the adoption of innovation and the spread of best practice across the NHS. NHS England took over the management of the RIF in 2013 and ran two consecutive calls for 2013/14 and 2014/15 years funding 87 projects in total. The last funding call for projects closed in May 2014.

The fund provided an opportunity for the NHS to change lives, helping clinicians to work in new ways, and driving the changes that patients want to see. The RIF also encouraged strong partnerships with industry and third sector to drive the adoption of new technologies.

Behaviour change through film

Case study arrowImproving patient and carer experience by staff delivering compassionate care to patients is a key priority for East London NHS Foundation Trust.

Behaviour change through film screen shotThis innovation has used the power of film and story-telling as a training resource to enhance the skills of staff to demonstrate the values of caring and compassion when dealing with people, not only those with diverse health conditions, but the complex social and cultural needs of the population.  Two diverse areas were identified:-

  1. Compassionate care in the community and
  2. Compassionate care towards people living with a diagnosis of early onset dementia.

These subjects address two of the most challenging healthcare issues in our society today. Two films have been created and both are currently being used internally as part of trust wide-training programmes and are available to other organisations on request.

  • You matter – follows the last few weeks of Ali, who has a long-term severe heart condition and a care plan that requests home-based palliative care when the time comes. https://vimeo.com/127699453  password: matter
  • Still here – letting go – follows the plight of Abdul Hassan, a middle aged man, who has been isolated by his family and friends through his condition.  The film explores the relationship between him, his youngest son and health professionals.  https://vimeo.com/118695803 password: abdul

The training films are an important and powerful training resources which have created opportunities to collaborate with other organisations, UCL Partners, University College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.  ‘You matter’ is being included in the development of training materials available across the North Central and East London education network.
